Race Schedule of NJ Summer Biathlon

Sunday May 9, 2010 - 5K, Cherry Ridge
Additional race dates yet to be determined

Recent attention to the Olympic biathlon events has fired up interest in our NJ summer biathlon program.

While we have our first race scheduled, we are still in the planning stages, determining where & when our next events will be this year. However, conducting a multi-sport event involving firearms is not easy and requires proper planning and quality manpower.

It is the "quality manpower" criteria that doomed our entire 2009 schedule. We simply did not have enough volunteers. We received a lot of laments, and yet.... not enough to garner the required recruits.

We need only a handful of individuals to complete our core group: 2 as timers / starters, 2 as scorers, 2-4 as range officials. A hard commitment is necessary in order for the event to be held, and be safe, efficient and fun!

Please contact us if you are willing to assist in our efforts to plan and conduct our 2010 season.

Distance: The May Race will be 5K.

Race Categories:
Match entails a shooting distance of 50m, small targets for Prone (4.5cm) and large targets for Standing (11.5cm). You must have your own rifle in order to participate in Match.

Sport entails a 25m shooting distance with 9.5cm targets for both Prone and Standing.

Race Format 5K: 5K RUN WITH 2 SHOOTING STOPS! The 5K race and timing starts with runners entering the course at one minute intervals. Running at a comfortable pace, you run the first loop of approximately 1 mile. Walk the last 50 meters or so into the range, catch your breath, then lay down and pick up the easy-to-shoot .22 caliber rifle. From this position, you shoot 5 shots at metal knock-down targets. Aim carefully, because for every miss you have to run a 70m penalty loop.

Walk rapidly out of the range and then run the second 1 mile loop. Again, relax as you walk into the range. Once at a shooting position, pick up the rifle and take careful aim as you shoot 5 more shots from the standing position. Again, there is a 70m penalty loop for every miss.

FAQ's: At the present time, we have a limited number of targets to use for our events, and a very limited number of volunteers. Those of you who participated in past races were able to experience first hand the ramifications of too many participants. There were long wait times to shoot (up to 90 seconds!) creating a slightly uneven playing field for the other competitors. We also had a lot of first-timers who required additional time in the range, being that they were new to the process. It becomes more and more difficult to conduct a fair and safe event when there is crowding on the range and exhausted volunteers on the job. Limiting the field to 50 participants allows us to create a carefully paced event, with minimal crowding on the trails and on the range. As we've stressed many times before, our start order is carefully determined the week prior to the race. We attempt to evenly distribute the personal rifles and evenly pace the runners to keep traffic moving at a steady rate through the range.
